At the end of 1994 Javi P3z (Parafünk, Javi P3z Orquesta) and Ibon Errazkin (Aventuras de Kirlian, Le Mans) get together and accidentally record two tracks (“Cien pies/33 metros”) during a session that features also Xabier “Loreak” Zirikiain. A few weeks later they decide to release these two tracks along with two more recorded by Pez on his own (“Ues täim/Is täim”). The record marks the first release of the Novophonic label, and the name chosen for the band is INSTRÜMENTAL.

The two only shows ever performed by the band also date from this time: at Lasarte’s Zulo bar on 1994’s Christmas Eve, and a few months later, in april of 1995, on the opening day of San Sebastián’s Festival de Nuevas Músicas. At this time the concept of the band hadn’t been yet properly defined, and on both occassions a good number of guests showed up onstage – no one knew very well what or who Instrümental was at the time. Finally the name ends up being the moniker under which P3z and Errazkin (who had already played together in the late 80’s in a band called 23 Ojos de Pez) will release a series of sporadic joint efforts during the following ten years:

  • In the summer of1996 they remix Le Mans‘s “Lucien”. The remix is included in the “Jonathan Jeremiah” 12” EP, released at the end of that year on Elefant Records.
  • At the end of 1997, they remix Helena Noguera‘s new single (a cover of Elvis Presley’s “All Shook Up”). Helena’s label rejected the remix, which was finally released as a vinyl only 7” on Novophonic in 2000.
  • A track called“Lección 47”, recorded in 1998 for the Mallorca-based label Primeros Pasitos’ “Café Bizarre” compilation.
  • A concept CD called “MiSiSolReLaMi6”, devised as an homage to the six strings of the guitar. Six improvisations recorded in the summer of 2002 and released in a limited run of 100 copies on the Üm label in 2004.

This CD is now reissued by PIAS Spain. It includes also many of the aforementioned tracks plus an improvisation recorded at Aventuras de Kirlian’s rehearsal space in 1989 in which Iñaki Gametxogoikoetxea (Family’s bass player) takes part.
